Abstract

Abstract

Sweet Sorghum is one of the “smart crop” that can accumulate high sugar content in their stalk. Indirect selection of high sugar content in sorghum stalk could be implemented by use genotypic correlation among characters with sugar content. The objective of this experiment was to determine secondary characters for selection of high sugar content of sorghum genotype. Field experiment was conducted during rainy and dry season at Field Experimental Station Padjadjaran University, West Java Indonesia in 2010. Field trial test was arranged in Randomized Complete Block design with five replications. Five sweet sorghum genotypes Keller, Wray, Taomitsu, Big Super Sugar and Sugar Sorgo were used in field experiment. Generally, agronomic performance of all sweet sorghum genotypes in rainy season was better than dry season. On the other hand average sugar content of sweet sorghum in dry season was higher than rainy season. Medium to high heritability was recorded by characters that showed correlation with high sugar content. Numbers of leave and panicle weight were negatively correlated with high sugar content in dry season. Key words: Genetic Correlation, Sugar Content, Sweet Sorghum
