Abstrak

The Eco-School program in schools often faces significant challenges, particularly limited land availability and a lack of personnel for regular plant maintenance. This community service program aims to address these issues through the implementation of an appropriate technology solution, namely the Smart Vertical Garden (SVG) based on the Internet of Things (IoT) at SDIT Al Uswah, Surabaya. The implementation method includes assessing the partner’s needs, designing and installing an SVG system integrated with soil moisture, temperature, and light intensity sensors, as well as conducting intensive training sessions for teachers and students. The SVG system functions to monitor environmental conditions and perform automatic watering, thereby optimizing the use of limited space and minimizing human intervention. The results of this community service activity show that the system was successfully implemented and received enthusiastic responses from the school. Moreover, the SVG system was able to reduce water consumption by up to 40%, optimize limited land through a modular vertical structure, and increase teacher and student engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-based learning. This program not only provides a technical solution but also serves as an educational medium to foster environmental awareness and technological literacy among school students. The implementation of SVG not only promotes the efficient use of water and resources but also enriches students’ learning experiences in science, technology, and sustainability, holistically supporting the partner school’s Eco-School vision. The sustainability of this program is ensured through the school’s strong commitment and its potential for replication in other educational environments.
