Impact of short film Berapa? on university students sexual harassment awareness
Abstract
Background: Sexual harassment in higher education remains a critical yet normalized issue, evidenced by documented cases at Universitas Negeri Surabaya, as the 2020 faculty student harassment and the 2023 peer-to-peer incident during campus orientation. These empirical facts highlight a severe lack of awareness and the necessity for urgent educational intervention. Purpose: This study analyzes the impact of the short film Berapa? as communicative stimulus on students’ awareness, grounded in S-O-R theory. Methods: Quantitative explanatory approach was used to examine the influence of stimulus variables on audience responses. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, involving 397 students from Universitas Negeri Surabaya (607 respondents). The study underwent rigorous validity (Pearson Product Moment) and reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha) testing to ensure data accuracy. Results: Results show a significant positive effect (sig. 0.000 < 0.05), with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.622 and an R-squared value of 0.387, indicating that the film contributes 38.7% to the increase in awareness. Conclusion: So, it can be concluded that the short film Berapa? effectively triggers emotional and behavioral responses. Implications: Implications suggest that well-managed cinematic media serve as powerful mass communication tools for impactful social campaigns to resolve critical campus issues and foster a safer academic environment.
