Abstract

Abstract

Failure of direct bonding procedure is mostly attributed to contamination of the enamel surface. To overcome this problem, materials have been developed that purpotedly overcome moisture and contaminants present on the enamel surface and has sufficient bond strength to withstand orthodontic forces. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference of bond strengths of light-cured resin-modified glass ionomer (Fuji Ortho LC / FOLC) between dry enamel and enamel contaminated group. Twenty-one extracted human premolars divided in 3 equal groups : the enamel surface were either, dry enamel, salivacontaminated, or saliva and blood-contaminated. Stainless steel brackets were bonded by Fuji Ortho LC, the bond strength was recorded and the data were analyzed by One Way Anova. The result indicate that the bond strength decreased by contaminating the enamel surface (FOLC – dry enamel: 10,799 Mpa, saliva-contaminated enamel : 9,543 Mpa, saliva and blood-contaminated enamel : 5,876 Mpa) The saliva and blood contaminated-enamel conditions produced the lowest bond strength. In conclusion, Fuji Ortho LC generates enough bond strength on saliva-contaminated enamel. On saliva and blood-contaminated enamel, the bond strength of FOLC is lower than required (6MPa).
