Abstrak

The climate crisis is one of the real threats nowadays. On the one hand, small-island peoples, such as those in Maluku Province, face climate risks. On the other hand, youth participation in climate communication remains underdeveloped. Based on observation, experience, and study, a partnership between a team from UKIM and the Classis of Ambon Island of the Protestant Church of Maluku (GPM) involved 18 Christian Generation Z participants in a community engagement program aimed at strengthening climate-crisis literacy, agency, and digital campaign skills. This program used a community-based participatory approach combined with training, workshops, audiovisual production practice, and mentoring. The participants had the opportunity to demonstrate their learning through five cinematography products. To evaluate this activity, the team conducted a one-group pre-test and post-test across eight sessions from 20 September to 14 December 2025. Available evaluation documentation was compared quantitatively and descriptively across four domains: basic understanding of the climate crisis, perceived urgency, motivation/agency, and digital communication strategy. Production evidence included scripts, storyboards, recording, editing, and campaign dissemination. All 18 participants were documented in the pre-evaluation, and post-training responses showed directional progress toward a more contextual understanding of climate issues, stronger action orientation, and the ability to translate climate issues into short-form audiovisual narratives for YouTube Shorts. The program contributes a faith-based, youth-centered model of digital environmental communication for a small-island context and highlights the need for qualitative evaluation and follow-up in future replications.
