Characteristic Comparison on Plastic Packaging Based on Cassava Tuber and Cassava Peel Starch: A Review
Abstrak
Plastic is one of the packaging that people need for various purposes. However, the drawback is that the use of this packaging creates environmental problems because it is difficult to decompose and the materials used for its manufacture come from non-renewable sources. Cassava is an alternative raw material for making plastic packaging because it contains high starch. In addition to the tubers, starch from the skin waste can also be used as a raw material for making plastic packaging and this utilization can reduce solid waste. Therefore, information is needed regarding the characteristics of plastic packaging made from starch to determine its feasibility to be used as packaging. This research uses a literature review method with a qualitative approach. The results of this literature review show that plastic packaging based on cassava starch has met the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) standards so that it is suitable for packaging with a resulting tensile strength value of 9.49 Mpa and 76.32% elongation, while plastic packaging based on cassava peel starch is still not by JIS standards but has the potential to be developed.
